How S.O.M.A.C was created: An open letter from Major W, US Army Special Operations, Retired
As a US Army Special Operations Officer, I never knew what a day might hold. We might be dropped out of the sky and need to hack our way through 20 miles of jungle just to get to our target. We might be dropped in the ocean and need to swim 10 kilometers to shore with all our gear in tow. Fitness wasn't a luxury for us – it was a matter of life or death. We trained like our lives depended on it – because, in fact, they did.We quickly figured out what worked and what didn't. And we didn't have time for so called “fitness” programs that didn't work.
When you're carrying a 100-pound pack up and down mountains all day long, you don't need muscles that just look pretty – you need muscles that work.
We've all heard stories like this: A burly weightlifter couldn't carry his own grandmother up the steps. Sure he had muscle, but it was the wrong kind of muscle – it wasn't there when he needed it.
In Special Operations, we needed muscle that worked.
But that wasn't all. We needed more than brute strength. When it was time to move, we needed to move fast, move far, and move under the most extreme conditions imaginable. Cardiovascular conditioning wasn't an option – it was a lifesaving necessity.
Ten minutes of hopping around in cute tights didn't cut it for us. Aerobics is almost too small a word for the kind of conditioning that was part of our every day two-hour physical training routine.
We knew we had to be prepared for every kind of challenge – from hand-to-hand combat to stealthy surveillance, from blowing up bridges to nursing a sick child back to health. That's why we combined running, swimming, meaningful calisthenics, every kind of martial arts, weight and load bearing conditioning.
We were good at what we did, but we never took that as an excuse to get lazy. Every day we looked for ways to get better.
That's how S.O.M.A.C. was born. In the mid-1980s, in the 100+ degree heat and humidity of one of our training camps, we discovered the powerful synergy of putting martial arts conditioning together with our already strenuous physical training program.

Bringing it into the 21st century

S.O.M.A.C. began as a physical training program for the most elite soldiers in the world. In 2005 and 2006 it was perfected into a fitness program for everyone by 6th Degree Black Belt Martial Arts Master Randy Beck.
Like many people, Master Beck was tired of the “hamster on a wheel” approach to fitness offered at many health clubs. Too many hours on the treadmill convinced him to team up with Major W and other experts, to create the best physical training program money could buy.

Everybody has a God-given desire to want to be able to protect themselves. It’s simply human nature. Your desire to protect yourself and your family makes perfect sense in our increasingly violent world. There isn’t a man or a woman who doesn't want to feel confident in a confrontational or combative situation, and especially if your family is in danger. It’s just human nature .Here's how S.O.M.A.C. makes that possible for you.
S.O.M.A.C. is a DVD-based fitness program built on practical martial arts technique. It works in real life. What does that mean?
One day I was sitting quietly at a table with a few friends. Some men at a nearby table started making inappropriate remarks about the young women with us. We did our best to ignore them.
But that wasn't good enough. One of the men, a huge biker, nearly a foot taller than me, decided it was time to come over to our table and do us bodily harm. I stood up and faced him, thankful for my own martial arts training.
He charged in a drunken rage, his eyes wild with unreasoning fury. I stepped forward and used a simple technique that I will teach you in your S.O.M.A.C. training.
It was like slicing through butter.
He staggered backwards and fell. His face was covered with disbelief. A few moments later, still dazed, he struggled to his feet. Meekly and quietly he left the room. I never saw him again.
Let me explain how this works.

In a real emergency you will respond as you have been trained to respond. You will respond without thinking because there isn't time to think. That's why “muscle memory” matters.
Let me explain “muscle memory.” You use muscle memory every day – to dress, to drive your car, to eat, to type on your computer, and to do a thousand other routines that you do automatically without thinking. S.O.M.A.C. trains you how to respond to an emergency with that same kind of “muscle memory.” Your hands, your feet, your whole body automatically knows what to do without you needing to stop and figure out how to respond.

This is a great way of loosening up, especially after lazing around. It's organized. The instructor (Mr. Beck) keeps a good tempo. This workout really works the abs and chest muscles. It's good for flexibility. It's a great half hour.
